STORY

Sang karna
There once was a king named sang prabhu surasena whose daughter,
dewi kunti, looked very beautiful to the like of sang hyang
ratih. the king's cousin sang kuntiboja raised her and ratu
pedanda siwa budha ( high priest ) performed upacara meningkat
dewasa, her puberty ceremony.the princess studied with ratu
begawan duwasena who appreciated her very much and because of
her good aptitude decided to teach her a very powerful mantra
used to call upon gods to appear. because of her strong desire
to meet sang hyang surya, she used this mantra at dawn with
all her will. before long sang hyang surya appeared to ask her
why she had called upon him, trembling she begged him to forgive
her audacity to use this sacred mantra for such selfish motive.
Sang surya unruffled, bestows anugrah upon her even tough she
does not wish for a child, and she does not even have a husband.
blessed by sang surya to preserve her virginity, the child is
born from her ear, hence is name sang karna. he was born wearing
shirt and earrings as a sign of his divine conception. because
she felt wrong and not ready to be a mother, kunti sent the
baby afloat down the gangga river in floating basket. he was
discovered and taken care of by sang adirata and his wife ni
rada. he grew up as sang radeya to become a very clever archer.
Many years later, sang prabhu pandu meeting with rsi krepa and
rsi drona agreed it was time for the king's sons to learn the
subtleties of archery. the panca ( five ) pandawa bothers, watched
by raja pandu with dewi gandari and dewi kunti by his side,
were practicing at the archery, when sang karna came along wanting
to complete with the best of them : sang arjuna. the king was
impressed by this new comer's skill, but even more interested
yet, was sang duryadana of the korawa family ( envious and greedy
of the fair and harmonious ( pandawa ). sang korawa quickly
befriended sang karna meaning to enroll him into his devices
to overthrow the pandawa family. arjuna aware of their planning
prepared himself to resist. dewi kunti fainted, grieved by the
realization that this new archer opposing her son, was her own
castaway child.
In the interim, begawan krepa intervened : "there is no
purpose to this fight, but to please sang korawa. remember,
power is not for showing off in arrogance, but to defend one's
country from outside danger. we allow competition as play and
practice, not as a death match. moreover sang arjuna is of ksatria
caste, he is prince, and so must be is opponent."hearing
the pries's words sang duryadana appointed sang karna as king
of awangga. sang bima, arjuna's elder brother, was not pleased
by this turn of event : "this contest will not be permitted,
sang karna is no prince !" duryadana furious retorted :
" the earrings and the shirt tattooed to his body are proof
enough of his ksatria status. " with all the brouhaha,
there were no skirmish that day, and dewi kunti praised sang
hyang widhi for the well being her sons.
Sang karna's friendship with durjyadana grew closer, together
envying the prestige of the pandawa. he sought begawan drona
hoping to learn brahmasirah mantra ( energy weapon ). very found
of arjuna and knowing karna's foul intentions drona refused
saying : " only holy, renounced yogis may know this mantra
".
Many years later, karna heard a rumor that the panca pandawa
had died. very pleased, he threw a big party and promised the
people to give anything he had that they wanted. then leaving
his wife dieh sutikanti and their seven sons tp the care of
her father, he traveled to mt. mnidyuti, to bagawan pongkatiksna's
holy dwelling. once there he met with his father, sang hyang
surya, who bestowed him with bajra wijayacopa, a powerful energy
weapon. he then traveled to mt. mahendra to study with begawan
ramaparasu, who because of karna's obedience and skill taught
him all he new, including brahmasirah mantra. one day practicing
in the forest, one of his arrows strayed and killed a brahman's
cow, whom furious cursed him so : " the day you fight your
enemy, your chariot will sink into the mud and your head will
be cut off." later during a purification pilgrimage, ramaparasu,
feeling weary, napped on karna's lap. a leech started to suck
his blood, with all his strength, which burned the pain, but
his sweating woke ramaparasu, who looked at the leech, which
burned instantly turning into raksasa who, thanking them for
liberating his form, disappeared. ramaparasu, realizing sang
karna had died about his identity, told him to go away and that
brahmasirah mantra would slip away if he used it. much later,
while he was meditating in far away place, sang hyang indra,
in the form of rsi came to karna, requesting his clothes knowing
that wearing the he could defeat arjuna. karna could not refuse,
since he had promised the people anything he had, but warned
by sang hyang surya, he asked for konta weapon in trade. indra
accepted but warned him that he could only used konta once.
In brata yuda the war as already started, sang kurupati korawa
as ask, sang karna to evenge the death of his brother to the
hands of sang bima. enraged sang karna ran amok killing anyone
he encountered. sang darmawangsa ( eldest pandawa ), pleaded
for to stop this rampage. arjuna asked sri krena to help, they
sent bima's son gatotkaca first, because of his mystic talents.
to get sang karna's attention, sang gatotkaca retaliated against
the korawa, killing most of their people, then hid in the sky
calling out to him. sang karna frustrated started shooting arrows
in all directions, but still the voice kept calling. unsuccessful
with arrows he used his konta weapon and gatotkaca fell, inert,
right on top of his chariot.
He then came to face arjuna and sri krena. he shot wijayadanuh
arrow from which comes out many kinds of arrows. arjuna shot
brahma astra arrow, which burned all of sang karna's arrows.
the god's then scattering flowers from the sky requested that
this war end before sang hyang siwa becomes infuriated. everyone
involved obeyed.right the ibu pertiwi ( earth ) shivered and
naga adrawalika vaulted out, seeking vengeance for arjuna's
slaying of his parents, he turned himself into an arrow, karna
then as if possessed and without heed to his charioteer sang
salya's warning, shot the arrow at arjuna. sri kresna lowered
his chariot and the arrow hit arjuna's crown. arjuna responded
by shooting his rudra arrow striking karna's chariot, sinking
it into the earth. before sang karna could react, arjuna released
his pasupati arrow piercing sang karna through the neck.
From the body emanated a bright red light that flew to the setting
sun. the korawa brothers, grieving at the scene, ran off defeated,
right then, there was an earthquake and blood started raining
down. hindu people believe that when sang hyang surya is sad
the sun turns to a red hue, and that the red clouds are sang
karna's bleeding body and the dark clouds are the korawa brothers
running away. mournful the sun becoming paler plunges into ocean.
