Bhoma
Dewa bhrama ( fire ) and dewa wisnu ( water ) challenged
each other's power and caused an energy column in heaven. dewa
brahma transformed into garuda to look for the summit while
dewa wisnu changed himself into a boar to lok for the base.
there he met with sang hyang wasundari ( aka ibu pertiwi or
mother earth ) and pursued her until she became pregnant. she
gave birth to sang bhoma ( in means born from land ) who takes
form in all trees and plants ( life is born when water meets
land ).bhoma's face, carved above the main entrance to houses
and temples, is seen as friendly or scary depending if a person's
intentions are good or bad. plants and pattern carvings ( bhoma
) are symbol of human soul. everyone coming to the house or
temple certainly hopes to receive jagadhita ( benefaction )
from bhoma.
Barong
when dewa siwa changed dewi uma into dewi dhurga, he also became
bhatara kala. the pair brought about distress and disease to
the world. the gods decided to create a distraction on appease
bhatara kala. in this ilen-ilen, dewa iswara becomes barong
who opposes the wicked desti ( leak, black magic demon ), which
plague the world and disturb the harmony and peace. dewa brahma
becomes topeng bang ( gentle god wearing a red mask ) who protects
barong from weapons. the gods also instructed the people to
mecaru and to purity the self by stopping all activities for
a whole day ( called nyepi ) to soothe bhatara kala. then the
next day ( called ngembak geni ) to start life anew, free from
misery. moreover, in the event that disaster should come again,
to perform the ilen-ilen barong.ever since, barong and topeng
are considered sacred and perform their dance on hindu holy
days and temple odalan.
Budha awatara
incarnation of dewa wisnu down to the earth to upright dharma,
especially the teaching religion, which had deviated from the
truth.born sidhartha gautama, son of prabu sudhodana from kapilawastu,
he grew up isolated from reality. his father worried that contact
with the outside world could be a bad influence and hinder his
noble plan for sidhartha to become a great king. yet ounce married,
with child only 12 days old, he left the palace, shaved his
head, and became a recluse. he sat with all other hermits, his
soul so lounging for what he could not find. finally, he came
to sit under a bodhi tree for 7 days and nights, and received
nirvana ( insight ) to the way of dharma.since then, he has
become known as sang budha, founder of the budha religion which
expanded all around the world.
Tirta sanjiwani
At a time when the world was overrun by raksasa ( demons ),
the gods, to protect mankind from turmoil and disease, took
possession of a glass of powerful holy water of eternal life
called tirta sanjiwani obtained by dewa siwa while meditating
at lautan susu ( sea of milk ). whoever drinks tirta sanjiwani,
also called tirta amerta, becomes invincible, that is why this
precious liquid is austerely set-aside for gods, saints, and
holy man.unfortunately, raksasa kala rau managed to steal the
valuable everlasting holy water and bring it to mount mandaragiri,
where he hid in acave, swarming with other similar raksasa and
malevolent creatures. sent to recover it, dewa wisnu, riding
with garuda, searched the mountain in and out ! turning over
every rock until informed of kala rau's whereabouts by dewi
ratih and bathara surya, whom saw him steal the famous tirta.
wisnu and garuda stormed kala rau's hideout, fighting and defeating
all the naga and demons guarding it, just as kala rau prepared
to drink. wisnu swiftly drew his bow and shot the demon's neck,
severing it and the tirta fell to the earth. regrettably, since
kala rau had already started drinking, his head has become invincible.
immortal and observed with vengeance kala rau wants to destroy
anything that is under wisnu's protection. therefore, kala rau
persistently chases after sun and moon, infuriated with them
for divulging his plants. occasionally he succeeds in his dark
endeavor, and devours one of them, causing an eclipse, which
is only temporary since, he has no body !
