Video Capture
DV Capture
DV means real video, with full-size, full-rate capture, and on standard computers. The associated 1394 / Firewire interface provides a standard connection that allows you to use your DV equipment with many different editing applications. And the 1394 interface is bi-directional, so you can not only capture from a DV camcorder, but also export your edited production back to DV tape to archive and share

While all movies on a computer are composed of ones and zeros and are therefore digital, Digital Video with a capital "D" and a capital "V" stands for a very specific format of video, just like VHS or High-8. This format can be understood (played back, recorded) by your camcorder and also by your computer, if you have the proper hardware (capture card) and software (DV codec). The most exciting thing about DV is that it can be copied from your camcorder to your computer, and then back to your camcorder (after editing, of course) without any loss of quality.

Analog Video Capture
An analogue input source (TV, (S)VHS, Camcorder, etc.) is digitized and stored on a computer.
In the old days of video editing on computers, one of the most difficult challenges was the first step of getting your video into the computer. This required converting from analog format, for example on a 8mm camcorder, into digital format on your hard disk. All you need is a video input on your PC. You can either use the video input of your TV- Capture device or the video input of your Graphics card (e.g. ASUS Deluxe or ATI All in Wonder serie). Using the video input of your GFX card will result in a better signal

Capture Resolution
There are two different systems which are commonly used (PAL and NTSC). PAL (Phase Alternate LINE) is used in most European countries (France and some Eastern Europe countries use SECAM which is closely related to PAL). On the PC the TV picture can be displayed in various resolutions, up to the native PAL resolution (768x576). The maximum resolution you can use to capture depends on your capture card and most cards support 7**x576 where the horizontal resolution only depends on your capture device. In order to keep the proper aspect ratio of the picture you can capture either at full resolution (768x576) or at 1/4 resolution (384x288). If you intend to put the video on a VCD use 352x288 pixels, for SVCDs use 480x576 (both times the picture will be horizontally squeezed a bit and then unstretched during playback).
· Using 1/4 resolution has a distinctive advantage. The output will not have any interlacing effects making deinterlacing unnecessary . For more information about this please refer to :

Capture Codec
Basically, your analog capture should be (almost) lossless. Huffyuv produces the best quality, but when choosing a higher resolution you need enormous amounts of disk space. Still, the codec is free. The second choice is the PicVideo MJPEG codec. The PicVideo version is good because it consumes rather few resources. Other MJPEG codecs are provided by Morgan and Leadtech. The difference between PicVideo and Huffyuv are that you can adjust the encoding quality in the MJPEG codec. Using the highest setting (20), the file size can get as large as the Huffyuv file, but if you use 18 or 19 the file size decreases significantly without harming the video quality. For DV capture/transfer try to use Mainconcept DV codec

Video Capture program for Analog and DV source

VirtualVCR
Virtual VCR is a DirectShow video capture application that allows you to capture Audio and Video to your hard drive in the AVI file format.Features Summary : Arbitrary resolution settings (480x576 etc). VirtualDoub
VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit Windows platforms (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

AVI_IO
Currently AVI_IO supports OHCI compliant boards or any other DV board as long as there is a Video for Windows capture driver installed for it, or a working WDM DirectShow wrapper. The support is currently limited to capturing only and also does not include device controlls. Boards known to work well are the ADS Pyro, the Exsys, SIIG and Pinnacles Studio DV. You need Windows 98SE or Windows 2000 or better, since only those platforms have a working WDM wrapper.

WinDV
WinDV is a small and easy to use Windows application for capturing videos from DV device (camcorder) into AVI-files and for recording AVI-files into DV device via FireWire (IEEE 1394) interface. Capturing is very reliable thanks to use of large buffer queue

ScenalyzerLive
ScenalyzerLive (short: ScLive) makes capturing video and selecting useful scenes from your DV-tapes very easy, comfortable and FUN! Sclive is the "missing link" between the Camera and your editing-program
This software features: CAPTURING with REAL TIME SCENE DETECTION, SEAMLESSLY CAPTURE/PLAYBACK TIME-LAPSE CAPTURING, QUICKLY INDEX YOUR TAPE, SMART BATCHCAPTURING, EASY STILLS EXPORT
